MONTEVALLO, Ala. – In a game where their All-American scored 31 points, the University of Montevallo men's basketball team fell just short to the undefeated University of West Georgia Wolves, 96-89.
In the first half, the Wolves absolutely shot the lights out. The visiting team sank 11 of their 13 attempts from three-point territory in the first half, a remarkable 84.6%.
The barrage of three-balls from UWG was led by Alex Abreu. The senior was 6-for-7 in the opening frame, including 5-for-6 from distance. He had 17 points at the break.
West Georgia's relentless attack to open up the game put Montevallo in an early hole. Troran Brown, the reigning PBC Player of the Year, allowed his squad to stay within striking distance.
Brown was able to score with Abreu, even exceeding his point total, as the senior from Phoenix, Arizona had 19 points at the half and was perfect on his attempts from three-point land.
As the half came to a close, Kimani Key hit a few crucial three-pointers for the Montevallo that helped make it just a 10-point contest as the teams hit the locker rooms.
In the second half, Montevallo came storming back, cutting a lead that was once 15 points to just a single point with a minute remaining.
Abreu scored the final six points of the game to close it out for the Wolves and secure the 96-89 win.
Abreu finished with a team-high 30 points for the undefeated Wolves (5-0).
Deonta Stocks was just behind Abreu, putting up 24 points and making seven of eight free throws.
