ATLANTA, Ga. – University of Montevallo junior Jacquelyn Thompson finished with a team-high 15 points in the Falcons' 99-60 loss at Georgia State University in the first exhibition game of the season Nov. 6 at the GSU Sports Arena.
Thompson finished with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc against the Panthers, a NCAA Division I opponent out of the Sun Belt Conference.
Junior Katherine Goldsby added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds in her first action with the Falcons. Goldsby finished 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and 4-of-8 at the charity stripe.
Junior Jasmine Thomas contributed nine points. Freshmen Andrea Petrovic and Katija Tarailo added seven points and six points, respectively.
Senior Carrington Caise finished with a team-high six assists before fouling out early in the second half.
The Falcons were outrebounded 58-36 against the Panthers' taller lineup. Montevallo shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the floor in the exhibition game.
Goldsby knocked down two 3-pointers and Thompson drained her first attempt from beyond the arc in the first two minutes of the game to help the Falcons race out to a 9-3 lead.
Georgia State went on a 10-4 run, tying the game on a jumper by Ashlee Cole with 14:29 remaining in the opening half. Thompson knocked down a second 3-pointer in the half to give Montevallo a 22-18 lead with 8:59 left in the half.
Goldsby made the second of two free throws to give the Falcons their final lead in the first half, 25-24, with 7:46 remaining in the half.
The Panthers closed the half with a 22-11 run, including a basket by Kennesha Nichols at the buzzer, to give Georgia State a 46-35 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
Goldsby and Thompson scored eight points each in the first half for the Falcons, who shot 43 percent (13-of-30) from the field and 33 percent (4-of-12) from beyond the arc.
A layup by Thompson in the opening minute of the second half trimmed the deficit to 48-39, which turned out to be the last time the Falcons managed to keep the margin within single digits in the second half.
Georgia State took a 56-41 lead following a layup by Kayla Nolan with 17:18 left in the game. A pair of free throws by Nolan gave the Panthers a 74-54 lead with 6:47 remaining.
Georgia State outscored the Falcons 53-25 in the second half.
The Falcons will take on Samford University in their final exhibition tune up Monday, Nov. 10 at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala.
Tip-off against the Bulldogs, a NCAA Division I member out of the Southern Conference, is set for 6 p.m.
