MONTEVALLO, Ala. – For the sixth time in seven games, the University of Montevallo was able to earn a point. On Saturday, against a tough conference foe, the Falcons earned their second straight PBC tie, drawing even with the Francis Marion Patriots, 1-1.
It was a rematch of last year's Peach Belt Conference, but there was massive turnover on each side. Francis Marion returned only six starters off last year's squad, while Montevallo only had two starters on Saturday that started in the championship game.
In the first half, neither team was able to put the ball in the back of the net, but both teams generated quality opportunities.
Montevallo had seven shots, putting three on goal. FMU keeper Mike Warn stopped all Montevallo threats, including a hard shot from senior Steven Didik.
The second half would be a similar story in terms of even competition, but this time there would be goals scored.
At 59:35, Didik was able to get one past Warn on a header after a Steven Rocca cross. That goal marked the first points of the year for both Didik and Rocca.
Montevallo maintained their one goal advantage for nearly 20 minutes before the Patriots were able to draw even.
At 77:04, the leading scorer for Francis Marion, Julius Broman, notched his fifth goal of the year on a rebound opportunity.
The game would remain tied at one for the remainder of regulation and both overtime periods. The 1-1 draw meant both squads would get an all important point in conference play.
In the contest, the Falcons outshot the Patriots 19-9 and had 11 corner kicks to just 5 from Francis Marion.
Montevallo is back in action this upcoming Wednesday, hitting the road to take on Clayton State.
