HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first of two games today the Falcons took on St. Mary's College (KS) in a neutral site contest.
The Falcons and the Spires came out and scored a set of quick goals with the Falcons striking first. With the game only 24 seconds old Georgi Griffin got Montevallo on the board with a goal, the first of her career.
The Spires tied the game up two minutes later with a goal but that is the closest they got the entire night.
With the game tied at 1-1 the Falcons went on a six goal run which included a pair of goals from Jami Hudak and Maddie Ellis to give Montevallo the 7-1 lead.
A free position goal for the Spires stopped the Falcons run and cut the lead to 7-2.
Montevallo scored seven more goals in the first half to finish with 14 points. The Falcons' defense only allowed one more goal which came in the first half with 10:10 left to play. Montevallo took a 14-3 lead into the locker room.
In the second half the Spires played a man down due to injuries and the Falcons took advantage to put the game away. Montevallo scored six unanswered goals in the second half to close out the game and seal the 20-3 victory.
In game two of the day for Montevallo, the Falcons took on Oklahoma Baptist. The Falcons and the Bison went back and forth for most the game with neither team holding a major advantage over the other.
The Bison struck first in the first half with a goal in the first minute of play. It took the Falcons four minutes before Hudak found the back of the net to knot the game up at 1-1.
The Bison where able to pull ahead of the Falcons in the first half and headed to the locker room with a 10-6 lead over Montevallo.
In the second half the Falcons and Bison exchanged goals until there were 10 minutes left in the game when Montevallo went on a six goal run to take the lead at 16-14. The run was capped off by a goal from Samantha Farrell.
After going ahead 17-15 the Falcons surrendered two goals in the last two minutes of the game as the Bison tied the game at 17-17 with 50 seconds left. The Falcons could not convert in the final minute and the game was sent into overtime.
With 1:42 left in the first overtime period Montevallo's Jessica Culver placed a smartly shot ball into the back of the net to give the Falcons the 18-17 overtime victory.
STAT OF THE DAY
Ellis scored a combined 10 goals in both of today's games and Jami Hudak netted eight goals for the Falcons.
UP NEXT
The Falcons now return home to take on Shorter University to open up Gulf South Conference play on Feb. 27th. That game is scheduled for 1:00pm at the Montevallo Lacrosse/Track and Field Complex.
