HOW IT HAPPENED
Montevallo fell to visiting Shorter 17-8 in its Gulf South Conference opener.
Shorter scored four early goals to take a 4-0 lead following a hat trick by McKinley Puckett before junior Maddie Ellis responded with a hat trick of her own late in the first half to tie the contest 3-3 at the halftime break.
Fellow junior Lexie Wright contributed a goal just more than two minutes into the second half to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead.
Shorter scored nine of the next 10 goals between the two teams in the second half to take a 11-5 lead.
Ellis added two goals in the second half, with Wright and freshman Jessica Culver contributing one goal each down the stretch.
However, six goals by the Hawks in the final 10 minutes of the game helped Shorter hold off the Falcons down the stretch.

Shorter finished with 36 shots in the contest compared to 21 shots by the Falcons.
BEYOND THE NUMBERS
Montevallo freshman goalkeeper registered a season-high 15 saves while playing the entire game for the Falcons.
Junior Maddie Ellis scored a team-high five goals, marking the third time this season she's scored five goals or more in a game.
