"I thought we competed at a high level": UM displays multiple record breaking performances in weekend debut

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's track and field team kicked off the 2021 season at the Birmingham Crossplex, taking on the UAB Blazer Invitational on Friday, and the Vulcan Classic on Saturday.

"I think the way the kids competed on Friday got us off to a great start," said head coach Tommy Barksdale.  "We started a little slow Saturday but then we picked it up with the new school records."

At the Blazer Invite the Falcons were led by Justine Glass who established a new school record in the 3000 meter run, finishing in 10:04.68 to place second. Glass wouldn't be the only Falcon to rewrite UM history this weekend in Birmingham.

In the pole vault Morgan Juarez broke her previously established UM record at 3.15m, to place tenth. Additionally Madelyn Bright tied her own record in the high jump at 1.60m in a tie for fifth with Samford's Makenzie Hooten.

Freshman Kyah Cook finished fifth in the long jump with a 5.22 mark in her Montevallo debut.  The Fitzgerald, Georgia native completed another top five finish in the triple jump at 11.53m, to place fourth.

"I thought we competed at a high level but we still have a few things to work on as a team to continue to get better.  Our main goal is to get as many people qualified for nationals as possible."

NEXT UP: The Falcons will be competing in the Samford Multi slated for Thursday, January 21 at the Birmingham Crossplex.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the meet will not be open to the public.
