BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After day one of the 2023 Gulf South Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, Montevallo men's and women's track and field hold fourth-place scores with both sides set new Falcon records.

On the men's side of the championship, sophomore
Braxton Sanford tied his Montevallo record with a third-place mark of 4.60-meters in the pole vault.
Matthew Gray set a pair of new Montevallo records in the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter run. The Freshman qualified for the final 60-meter race with the fifth-fastest time at 6.87 seconds. Gray will also make an appearance in the 200-meter final after posting the third-best time of 21.72 seconds. In the long jump,
Caleb Kariuki took home the bronze with a leap that cleared 7.00-meters. Nate Boleware posted a solid first day of heptathlon events with two wins in the long jump (6.84m) and the 60-meter (7.55s). Boleware is currently second in the Multi table with 2,682 points.
The Montevallo women's track and field team also broke records with Nyla Shipman setting the UM record in the shot put with a mark of 12.39-meters (4
th).
Hannah Smith added a second record when she posted a time of 7.84 seconds. Sophomore
Skylar Suggitt earned a spot on the podium in the pole vault with a height of 3.40-meters (3
rd) while
Leah Dendy finished just behind at 3.25-meters (4
th).
"We had a solid first day of the championships," said Head Coach
Tommy Barksdale. "We have some work to do, and we still have to bring it tomorrow but, we're excited to see what tomorrow brings."
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
- Nate Boleware's mark of 6.84-meters in the heptathlon long jump is now a GSC Indoor Track and Field Championship record.
- Alex Malone posted a top-five finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.80-meters (5th).
- The women's DMR team took a fourth-place finish in the event with a time of 12:33.00.
- Natalie Warner earned a top-15 finish in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 18:30.93.
UP NEXT: The GSC Indoor Track and Field Championships will continue Feb. 15 with 23 individual champions and two team champions crowned at the end of the event.
