MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men's basketball team returns to Central State Bank Arena this week for a pair of Gulf South Conference contests.
The Falcons will first host Delta State on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. before welcoming Mississippi College on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 4 p.m.
During this week's games there will be several promotional opportunities and special recognitions. On Thursday, Montevallo athletics will recognize Central State Bank and celebrate the official renaming of the arena to Central State Bank Arena. Throughout the game Central State Bank will be giving away several prizes, including two $250 visa giftcards, a cooler and will host a shootout competition for a $500 visa giftcard. There will also be a scholarship trivia contest, beginning in the women's game and running throughout the men's. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
On Feb. 3, the Falcons welcome Mississippi College and will recognize the 2024 Montevallo Athletics Hall of Fame class during halftime. The 2024 class will be formally inducted on Friday, Feb.
Montevallo enters the homestand following a pair of losses last week against UAH and at Lee. The Falcons begin the week at 7-13 overall and 6-10 in conference play and are currently in ninth place.
Delta State, currently tied for fifth place in the GSC, makes the trip to UM at 11-8 overall and 9-6 in league action while Mississippi College is 10-9 overall and tied for fifth at 9-6.
Montevallo dropped both matchups against the magnolia state foes earlier this year. Delta State topped UM 97-77, after Mississippi College narrowly edged the Falcons 100-96.
For Montevallo, Cam Glover continues to lead the way in scoring with 16 points per game. The Trussville, Alabama native is second in the GSC with 59 three-pointers on the year with an average of 3.0 per game.
For most of the season, UM's offense has led or ranked second in points per game. However, with offensive struggles last week, Montevallo is currently fifth in scoring at 80.3 points per game. In addition to Glover,
Jack Henderson and
Brandon Fussell are each averaging double-figures per game with 12.8 and 11.6 points per game, respectively.
Delta State is led by Keithean Brooks at 16.1 points per game and Maalik Cartwright with 15.5 points a night. Cartwright also ranks second in the GSC in field-goal percentage, 59.1 percent, and leads in blocks with 2.2 per game.
The Statesman enter the matchup coming off a loss to Valdosta State and a win over West Florida last week. DSU boasts the league's third-best offense at 80.8 points per game and the 10th ranked defense, only allowing 77.2 points a night.
Mississippi College will feature the GSC's top scorer on Saturday in Rashad Bolden. Bolden is scoring a conference best 24.6 points per game and scored 24 against Montevallo during the first matchup of the year.
The Choctaws, however, have the GSC's worst-ranked offense at 70.3 points per game and fourth ranked defense, allowing 70.6 points per game.
Mississippi College was defeated by Christian Brothers, 64-59, but topped Valdosta State 83-79 last week.
