Falcons Face Miles, Wednesday, in Birmingham

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – With three straight wins on the road, Montevallo baseball continues a nine-game road stint at Miles College, on Wednesday, at 1 p.m. in Birmingham.
 
The game will be played at Lawson State due to ongoing construction at historic Rickwood Field.
 
Montevallo, 16-10, enters the midweek following a 3-1-week last week. The Falcons dropped a game to Spring Hill, 4-3, but swept Mississippi College in a dominant showing both on the mound and at the plate.
 
On Monday, the Falcons re-entered the NCBWA South Region Poll sixth and earned two Gulf South Conference Weekly awards: Pitcher of the Week, Logan Samuels and Freshman of the Week, Zach Wyatt.

So Far This Season…

The Falcons, who have been up and down at times this season, are currently back on the winning track. Montevallo started the season fourth in the NCBWA South Region Poll but fell out after three opening weekend losses. After opening weekend, the Falcons strung together a series of eight straight wins and regained a spot in the poll at 6th but fell to ninth after a loss to CBU and fell out after dropping a series to Delta State. Last weekend, Montevallo swept Mississippi College to earn consecutive wins for the first time since February.
 
Montevallo takes its three-game win streak on the road to Miles before continuing conference play in Huntsville.
 
The offense continues to remain in the top five of the GSC in average, .308, runs scored, 205, hits, 263, doubles, 46, triples, 5, homers, 31, RBI, 186, total bases, 412 and walks, 118. Montevallo leads the league in hit-by-pitches with 63.
 
On the mound, the UM pitching staff has struck out the second most batters in the league this season, 211, and has a league second-best .266 opponent batting average.
 
Scouting Miles:

Miles enters the midweek 12-13 on the year and was swept last time out against Lane. Before last week's sweep, Miles won seven in a row, including a midweek win over Christian Brothers 12-9.


Series History Against Miles:

Montevallo is 16-2 against Miles since 2013 and have won the last six consecutive. Both losses in the series were on the road.
Miles last defeated the Falcons on Feb. 13, 2019, at Rickwood Field, 4-1.

Player Highlights Montevallo:


Seth Gurr will start on the mound for the Falcons in the midweek. Gurr has a 3.77 ERA on the year with a win and 19 K's. He threw seven innings with just two runs scored and five strikeouts against Spring Hill last week.
 
In the bullpen, Chris Foster leads the Falcons with a 2.53 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, three saves, two wins and 11 K's.
 
Freshman reliever Zach Wyatt was named the GSC Freshman of the Week this week. He is 1-0 on the year and has one save.
 
At the plate, Connor Crowson leads the way with a .379 batting average, 27 RBI and five homers.
