Falcons Split Wednesday Doubleheader with Columbus State

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo softball team split a Wednesday doubleheader with Columbus State (1-0, 5-10) at Softball Stadium at Orr Park.

GAME ONE
A trio of pitchers combined to earn the shutout for Montevallo. Taylor Lloyd started the game and pitched four innings total, allowing one hit and striking out four. Addy Tillery pitched three innings, allowing one hit, two walks, and one hit-by-pitch. Mya Young sealed the deal for UM and earned her first win of the season. Young pitched one inning, sitting down all three batters that she faced.

Both teams struggled to find success offensively, as the first runner to reach scoring position came in the top of the fifth inning. The Falcons also got a runner into scoring position in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to capitalize.

Montevallo got a pair of runners on in the bottom of the seventh, as the Falcons looked to walk it off. A strikeout ended the inning, sending the game into extra innings.

After a leadoff hit-by-pitch, Mya Young entered the game and sat down three Cougars in a row, giving the Falcons another chance to walk it off in the bottom of the eighth.

Montevallo looked to rally in the bottom of the eighth. After Riley Tyree reached on a fielder's choice, Becca Benton singled and Tyree advanced to third. Molly Pendley reached on a fielder's choice, and the Falcons loaded the bases with two outs. Ellie Derrick singled up the middle, capturing the game winning RBI to break the scoreless tie giving UM the 1-0 victory.

GAME NOTES GAME TWO
Four Falcons saw action in the circle in game two. A pair of UM pitchers, Kinsley Byrd and Addy Tillery, allowed no runs during their time in the circle.

Columbus State opened the second game strong, plating six runs in the top of the first.

The Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, as Emma Hawkins tripled and scored on the throw.

CSU added three more runs in the fourth, pulling ahead 10-1.

Montevallo started to find momentum in the bottom of the fourth, as Molly Pendley and Kendall Channell earned singles, and Kennedy Hussey reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. Bentlee Stiner hit an RBI-single and Ellie Derrick followed that up with a three RBI-double later in the inning, as Montevallo cut the deficit to 10-5.

The Cougars looked to strike again in the top of the sixth, putting two on with no outs, but Addy Tillery entered the game and kept CSU off the board.

The Falcons were unable to find offense in the final two innings, as Columbus State went on to take the 10-5 victory in game two.
