Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – Montevallo women's lacrosse fell in its season opener, 10-8, on the road at Newberry on Friday afternoon.
Newberry broke the ice with its first goal of the day at the 12:23 mark of the first quarter before
Ellery Shearer tied the game a 1-1 on an unassisted effort. The Wolves went on to score a pair of unanswered goals to go up 3-1 before
Chloe Norman's first goal of the season on a free-position shot pulled the Falcons back within one at the 9:10 mark. Goalkeeper
Ashlei Piazza tallied a pair of saves in the final two minutes of the first to head into the second with the Falcons trailing by one.
With 13:37 on the clock in the second,
Claire Withington tallied her first of the season to knot the game at 3-3. Norman answered another Newberry goal with eight minutes left before the half to keep the game tied this time at 4-4. A trio of unanswered goals from Newberry left the Falcons trailing 7-4 with 4:18 left in the half. Shearer scored the final goal of the opening half to make the score 7-5 with 3:45 heading into the locker room.
Out of the break, Piazza tallied another save before a Wolves goal at the 11:24 mark made the score 8-5. Following yet another Falcon save, Withington's second goal pulled the Falcons back within a pair of goals before transfer
Gencie Coan scored on a free-position shot to make the score 8-7 with 6:36 left in the third. Newberry added its ninth goal of the day in the final minute of the third to take a 9-7 lead heading into the fourth.
Piazza opened the fourth with a pair of saves in the first six minutes before Newberry extended its lead to 10-7 at the 7:20 mark. Withington completed her hat trick at the 6:23 mark of the fourth quarter to pull the Falcons back within a score of 10-8. The Falcons saw a pair of scoring chances in the final six minute but couldn't cash in and fell on the road.
