Box Score ROME, Ga. – Montevallo women's lacrosse picked up its first win of the season with an 18-4 victory over Shorter on the road.
Montevallo jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first minute of action with goals from
Mia Black and
Chloe Norman. The Hawks answered with its first goal of the day at the 12:53 mark. Junior keeper
Ashlei Piazza tallied her first save of the day at the 10:40 mark before
Kennedy Goddard scored a free-position goal on a Montevallo power play to stretch the lead out to 3-1.
Claire Withington got in on the scoring with
Ellery Shearer on the assists before
Carsyn Tinney gave UM a 5-1 lead with 2:05 left in the first. Shearer and
Asha Jamieson scored back-to-back goals for Montevallo to end the first with Montevallo leading 7-1.
Piazza added a second save on the day after stopping the first shot on goal of the second quarter before Withington scored her second of the day with 11:26 on the clock. Shorter answered just a few minutes later to cut the lead to 8-2 at the 7:28 mark. Shearer scored the second UM free-position goal of the day before
Mikaela Barbieri scored her first of the season to give UM a 10-2 lead at the 3:15 mark. Shearer added back-to-back goals to give UM a double-digit lead with 2:14 left in the half before
Gencie Coan's first of the day gave UM a 13-2 lead heading into the break.
Jamieson tallied her second of the afternoon for the first goal of the second half with the assist credited to
Hannah Rudge. Piazza added another three saves to her record before Shorter scored to make the score 14-3 with 6:39 left in the third. Rudge answered the Hawks' goal with her first career goal before Shorter added another to give UM a 15-4 lead with 4:25 left in the quarter. The Falcons saw another pair of scoring chances but couldn't convert to hold a 15-4 lead heading into the fourth.
Ally Rich stretched Montevallo's lead to 16-4 with her first of the season at the 13:34 mark of the fourth quarter. A trio of Shorter saves kept the Falcons from scoring for the next six minutes before Morgan Dodge tallied her first-career goal to make the score 17-4 with just 7:57 to play.
Chloe Norman scored Montevallo's 18
th goal of the day with 3:38 on the clock to give Montevallo its first win of the season.
