BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has released the 2023 Spring All-Academic awards along with the 2023 Spring Academic Honor with Montevallo landing 13 athletes on the All-Academic squads while leading the league with 158 Honor Roll selections.
ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS | ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL
Montevallo baseball led the way with five selections making their way onto the 14-person roster. Women's track and field and women's lacrosse followed closely behind with three honorees apiece while softball and women's golf each landed one athlete on the All-Academic teams.
Baseball's
Asa Awbrey earned the All-Academic nod after posting a 3.79 GPA in his finance courses while batting .333 on the season with 57 RBI, 13 home runs with starts in all 55 contests.
Khalid Collymore's 3.83 GPA in his political science program along with a .374 batting average with just 11 strikeouts landed the senior on the All-Academic squad. Four-time Player of the Year
Sam Kuchinski received the scholastic honor with a 3.57 GPA in his exercise science courses while leading the league in on-base percentage (.542), on base plus slugging (1.285), home runs (16) and RBI (69). The Falcons' second baseman
Reed Latimer's 3.56 GPA in his mathematics major landed the senior on the academic team after a season that saw a .358 batting average with 14 home runs and 67 RBI. Fifth year
Ben Teel rounded out Montevallo's baseball selections with a 3.69 GPA in his double major of accounting and finance while batting .368 with 63 RBI and 12 home runs.
2023 GSC Champion Scholar Athlete
Courtney Keeler headlined the women's track and field All-Academic team with a perfect 4.00 GPA in her chemistry major in a season that saw the senior run Montevallo's fastest times in the 10,000-meter (38:35.77) and the 5,000-meter races (18:31.34).
Amber Fisher's perfect 4.00 GPA earned the mathematics major an All-Academic selection after setting the Falcons' best 800-meter time at 2:21.36 and the fastest 1,500-meter time at 4:48.70. Senior
Ana Watters closed out Montevallo's All-Academic selections with a 3.95 GPA in her exercise science courses and a season that saw two top-five finishes and a personal best in the 10,000-meter race (42:24.55).
2023 GSC Defender of the Year
Ashley Shen made her way onto the women's lacrosse All-Academic team after posting a 3.92 GPA in her biology courses while leading the conference in ground balls (55), and caused turnovers (53) with a nation-leading 3.67 ground balls per game. Second-team All-GSC selection
Anja Kuys landed on the academic squad with a 3.96 GPA in her exercise science courses with the second-most ground balls per game (3.44) and caused turnovers per game (2.13) in the league. Montevallo attacker
Lily McCormick earned an All-Academic selection with a perfect 4.00 GPA in her mass communications program and a season that saw the senior score eight goals and add 11 assists for a total of 19 points while grabbing 11 ground balls.
Second Team All-GSC first baseman
Taylor Robinson was the lone softball player named to the All-Academic team after recording a 4.00 in her exercise science courses during a season that saw the fifth-year bat .358 with a team-high 16 home runs and 44 RBI.
Sophomore
Paulina Bermejo rounded out Montevallo's All-Academic selections with a perfect 4.00 GPA in her exercise science courses while finishing tied for second with a 1-over 217 at the 2023 GSC Championship.
In order to be named to the GSC All-Academic team, nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better their entire academic career at their institution and may not be a freshmen or first-term transfer. The student-athlete must also be a significant contributor to the team. Other factors include leadership, community service and extracurricular activities. Institutions are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
