MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team fell to top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University 9-0 in its home opener Feb. 9.
The Falcons (1-1) dropped all six singles matches and all three doubles matches against the Pirates, the two-time defending NCAA Division II national champions and the top-ranked team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason rankings.
Junior Niki Polcerova dropped her No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0 against the Pirates' Aleksandra Filipovski. Junior Liucija Smaizyte fell to Barbara Krtickova of Armstrong 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match.
Junior Anais Robert dropped her No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-0 against the Pirates' Carolina Prats-Millan. Sophomore Allison Howell fell to Clara Perez in the No. 4 singles match 6-1, 6-0.
Senior Haley Highfield fell to the Pirates' Olga Kalodzitsa 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles match. Sophomore Juanita Ossa dropped her No. 6 singles match 6-1, 6-0 against Dora Andrejski of Armstrong.
Polcerova and Robert fell to Filipovski and Krtickova 8-0 in the No. 1 doubles match. Howell and Highfield dropped the No. 2 doubles match 8-0 against Kalodzitsa and Marlen Hacke of Armstrong.
Smaizyte and Ossa fell to Prats-Millan and Clara Perez of Armstrong 8-0 in the No. 3 doubles match.
The Falcons return to action Feb. 13 with a non-conference match on the road at Tuskegee.
The match is set for 2:30 p.m.
