TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team dominated in singles' and doubles' action on its way to a 9-0 win over host Tuskegee University in its season-opening match Feb. 7, marking the first victory at Montevallo for first-year coach Adam Albertsen.
Senior Octavia Saunders clinched the sweep for the Falcons with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the Tigers' Cheryl Dixon in the No. 6 singles' match in the first match of her career.
Freshman Grace-Laura Rowe overcame a loss in the first set in a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 win over Navilla Paul of Tuskegee in the No. 5 singles' match in her first match with the Falcons.
Senior Nikola Polcerova, who begins the season ranked No. 9 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II Southeast Region singles' rankings, defeated Reicia North of Tuskegee 6-0, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles' match. Polcerova overcame a 5-2 deficit in the second set to clinch the match.
Junior Allison Howell defeated the Tigers' Kimberly Bowen 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles' match. Senior Anais Robert topped Kayla Triche of Tuskegee 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3 singles' action. Senior Juanita Ossa swept the Tigers' Taylor Wilson 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles' match.
Polcerova and Robert defeated Bowen and North 8-3 in No. 1 doubles' action. Rowe and Ossa topped Triche and Wilson 8-0 in the No. 2 doubles' match and Howell partnered with senior Liucija Smaizyte to defeat Dixon and Paul 8-0 in No. 3 doubles' action.
The Falcons will return to action Sunday, Feb. 8 in their home opener against Clark Atlanta University.
