HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – University of Montevallo senior Nikola Polcerova was one of two bright spots for the Falcons, joining senior teammate Anais Robert as the lone Falcons to pick up a win in singles' action in a 7-2 setback on the road at UAH in a non-conference match March 18.
Polcerova, who moved up to No. 5 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II Southeast Region singles' rankings, defeated the Chargers' Marleen Gort 6-1, 6-3 as she improved to 8-1 in No. 1 singles' action this season.
Robert topped Marta Briega of UAH 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles' match, with the Falcons dropping the remaining four singles' matches and all three doubles' matches. Montevallo (5-5) forfeited the No. 6 singles' match and No. 3 doubles' match with a shorthanded lineup.
"I am really proud of how we played and the effort these girls put in," said Montevallo women's tennis coach Adam Albertsen. "UAH is a strong team and with us being shorthanded, these girls stepped up and played very well and never stopped battling."
Junior Allison Howell fell to Cristina Cabanas of UAH 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles' match. Senior Octavia Saunders fell to the Chargers' Naomi Esteve 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles' match. Freshman Grace-Laura Rowe dropped her No. 5 singles' match against Aniek Remmerswaal of UAH 6-1, 6-3.
Polcerova and Robert fell to Gort and Remmerswaal 8-5 in the No. 1 doubles' match, while Howell and Rowe dropped the No. 2 doubles' match against the Chargers' Katie Bryant and Cabanas 8-6.
The Falcons will return to action Sunday, March 22 with a trip to Mobile, Alabama to take on Spring Hill College.
