MOBILE, Ala. – Eight University of Montevallo freshmen made successful debuts in head-to-head competition as the Falcons swept host Spring Hill College 9-0 in the first match of the spring for both teams.
The Falcons dropped just nine sets in singles' play while dominating the Badgers.
Freshman Alina Munteanu defeated Maria Hastings of Spring Hill 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 singles' action. Freshman Emily Beatty topped the Badgers' Madison Artigues 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles' match.
Freshman Rayne Sinclair defeated Brenda Carrada of Spring Hill 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles' match. Senior Allison Howell topped the Badgers' Elizabeth Peters 6-0, 6-0 in No. 4 singles' play.
Freshman Julia Berg defeated Kate Sotolongo of Spring Hill 6-0, 6-0 in No. 5 singles' action. Freshman Lauren Pero clinched the match for the Falcons as she took down Heather Sutton of Spring Hill 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles' match, which was the fifth completed match on the day.
Munteanu and Sinclair teamed up to edge Hastings and Artigues 9-7 in the No. 1 doubles' match, which marked the closest margin on the day.
Howell and freshman Alice Copland combined to defeat Peters and Carrada 8-0 in the No. 2 doubles' match. Twin sisters Allison Whitley and Melanie Whitley, both freshman, teamed up to defeat Sotolongo and Allison Gmelich of Spring Hill 8-0 in the No. 3 doubles' match.
The Falcons will return to action Friday, Feb. 5 with a match on the road at Tuskegee University. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
