SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team capped its fall season Oct. 14 with a sweep of Belmont Abbey College and Converse College.
The Falcons defeated Belmont Abbey 8-1 in their first match of the day before sweeping Converse 9-0 later in the afternoon. Both matches were played on the Converse campus in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Sophomores
Julia Berg and
Rayne Sinclair led the Falcons after sweeping their opponents in singles' action.
Berg topped the Crusaders' Rachele Subik 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles' match and Sinclair defeated Sofia Moreno of Belmont Abbey 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 singles' match.
Sophomore
Alina Munteanu defeated the Crusaders' Teagan McNamara 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles' match. Sophomore
Emily Beatty took down Aisiri Jandyala of Belmont Abbey 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 in the No. 2 singles' match.
Freshman Merel Van Zutphen topped the Crusaders' Savannah Smith 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) in the No. 3 singles' match. Fellow freshman
Amanda Gautreaux defeated Morgan Zahnd of Belmont Abbey 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 6 singles' match.
Zutphen and Munteanu swept Jandyala and Alex Weber of Belmont Abbey 8-0 in the No. 2 doubles' match. Beatty and sophomore Allison Whitley topped the Crusaders' Smith and Erika Noblett 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles' match.
Five of the six Falcons in singles' action swept their opponents in the match against Converse.
Munteanu swept the Valkyries' Steffi Kong 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles' match. Beatty topped Alex Schlesener of Converse 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles' match.
Van Zutphen took down the Valkyries' Taylor Parrott 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles' match. Sinclair swept Mary Kaitlyn Flynn of Converse 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles' match.
Gautreaux defeated Carlie Peeler of Converse 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 singles' match. Sophomore
Lauren Pero swept the Valkyries' Abby Roth 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles' match.
Copland and Berg defeated Parrott and Kong 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles' match. Munteanu and Van Zutphen topped Schlesener and Flynn 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles' match.
Beatty and Whitley took down Peeler and Roth 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles' match.
The Falcons finish the fall season with a 2-0 mark. The contests were the lone events of the fall portion of the season that counts towards the team record for the 2016-17 season. The season is scheduled to resume in the spring semester.
