AUGUSTA, Ga. - The University of Montevallo women's tennis team fell to host Augusta University 6-3 in its second consecutive match against a nationally-ranked opponent Feb. 21.
The Falcons (4-2 overall, 0-2 in Peach Belt Conference) won two singles' matches and one doubles' match against the Jaguars, who are ranked No. 36 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II national rankings and No. 6 in the Southeast Region rankings.
Freshman Alina Munteanu defeated Brooke Durden of Augusta 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles' match. Freshman Emily Beatty topped the Jaguars' Monica Gonzalez 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 in the No. 2 singles' match.
Senior Allison Howell and freshman Alice Copland defeated Gonzalez and Amelia Pinoargote 9-8 in the No. 2 doubles' match with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker.
Freshman Rayne Sinclair fell to Maria Cecilia Pimentel of Augusta 6-7, 5-7, 2-6 in the No. 3 singles' match. Howell dropped the No. 4 singles' match 2-6, 0-6 to the Jaguars' Gisela Font.
Freshman Lauren Pero fell to Maria Nadal of Augusta 2-6, 1-6 in the No. 5 singles' match. Copland dropped the No. 6 singles' match 4-6, 2-6 against Pinoargote.
Munteanu and Sinclai fell to Burden and Pimentel 9-7 in the No. 1 doubles' match. Beatty and freshman Julia Berg dropped the No. 3 doubles' match against Font and Nadal 8-4.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Feb. 27 with a match on the road at Georgia Southwestern in Americus, Georgia. First serve is set for 2 p.m. Eastern/1 p.m. Central.
