SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team swept host Converse College 9-0 in its first match of the season Oct. 12.
The Falcons swept the Valkyries in both singles' and doubles' action without dropping a set.
Junior Alina Munteanu, who was ranked No. 34 nationally in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II rankings a year ago, earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Steffi Kong of Converse in the No. 1 singles' match.
Junior Emily Beatty topped the Valkyries' Taylor Parrott 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles' match. Freshman Bhargavi Kalaga defeated Kaitlin Knight of Converse 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles' match.
Sophomore Amanda Gautreaux recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Valkyries' Alex Schlesener in the No. 4 singles' match. Junior Allie Whitley defeated Morgan Hildebrandt of Converse 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 singles' match.
Junior Rayne Sinclair swept the Valkyries' Carlie Peeler 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles' match.
Junior Alice Copland and freshman Maria Garcia teamed up to defeat Kong and Knight 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles' match.
Munteanu and Gautreaux topped Schlesener and Parrott 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles' match, while Whitley and Sinclair defeated Peeler and Hildebrandt 8-2 in the No. 3 doubles' match.
The Falcons will return to action Oct. 13-14 at the Belmont Abbey College Invitational in Belmont, North Carolina.
