MORROW, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team defeated Clayton State University 8-1 in its Peach Belt Conference opener Feb. 25.
The Falcons defeated Clayton State for only the second time in 12 meetings between the two programs as Montevallo improved its program-record start to 9-0.
Montevallo did not drop a set in singles' action as the Falcons won all six singles' matches and two of three doubles' matches.
Sophomore Alina Munteanu defeated Kristiin Mets of Clayton State 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles' match. Sophomore Emily Beatty topped the Lakers' Darina Drozdova 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles' match.
Sophomore Julia Berg defeated Laura Shkembi of Clayton State 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles' match. Freshman Merel Van Zutphen took down the Lakers' Brittney Canty 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles' match.
Sophomore Rayne Sinclair claimed the No. 5 singles' match against Alina Ageichick with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Freshman Amanda Gautreaux knocked off the Lakers' Carolina Monterrubio 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the No. 6 singles' match.
Mets and Drozdova defeated sophomore Alice Copland and Sinclair 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles' match, which marked the Lakers' lone win in the match.
Munteanu and Van Zutphen swept Shkembi and Ageichick 8-0 in the No. 2 doubles' match. Berg and Gautreaux swept Monterrubio and Canty 8-0 in the No. 3 singles' match.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, March 4 with a Peach Belt Conference contest on the road at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla. First serve is set for 9 a.m. Eastern/8 a.m. Central.
