MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team opened the spring with a 9-0 sweep of future Gulf South Conference foe Christian Brothers University in a neutral-site match at Lagoon Park.
The Falcons (3-0) clinched the sweep when sophomore Julia Berg secured a 6-1, 5-7, 10-6 win over the Buccaneers' Rachel Farmer in the No. 3 singles' match.
Sophomore Alina Munteanu defeated Lauren Woog of Christian Brothers 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles' match. Sophomore Emily Beatty topped the Buccaneers' Tara McElroy 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles' match, rallying from a 4-3 deficit in the second set.
Freshman Merel Van Zutphen took down Meg Mattis of Christian Brothers 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles' match. Sophomore Rayne Sinclair clinched the No. 5 singles' match with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of the Buccaneers' Brittany Weathersby.
Freshman Amanda Gautreaux rounded out the sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Darby Laschober in the No. 6 singles' match.
Sophomore Alice Copland teamed with Sinclair to defeat Farmer and Woog 8-4 in the No. 1 doubles' match. Munteanu and Van Zutphen topped Mattis and McElroy 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles' match.
Sophomore Allie Whitley teamed with Beatty in a 8-0 sweep of the Buccaneers' Melody Mays and Weathersby in the No. 3 doubles' match.
The Falcons return to action Sunday, Feb. 5 in their first home match of the season against Tuskegee University. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
