AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team defeated Augusta University 6-3 in a Peach Belt Conference match March 18, marking the Falcons' first win over the Jaguars since joining the conference.
Montevallo improved to 12-2 overall and 2-2 in Peach Belt Conference play and is one win away from tying the school record for victories in a single season.
Sophomore Alina Munteanu, who is ranked No. 12 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II Southeast Region singles' rankings, defeated Merye Gobernate of Augusta 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles' match.
Sophomore Emily Beatty topped the Jaguars' Monica Gonzalez 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles' match. Freshman Amanda Gautreaux defeated Amelia Pinoargote of Augusta 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the No. 5 singles' match.
Sophomore Lauren Pero closed out the match with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Jaguars' Joana Barcelo in the No. 6 singles' match.
Sophomore Alice Copland teamed up with Munteanu to defeat Eva Miralles-Miro and Marie Cantenot 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles' match. Sophomore Julia Berg and Gautreaux topped the Jaguars' Alejandro Gonzalez Arranz and Gobernate 8-6 in the No. 3 doubles' match.
The Falcons will return to action Sunday, March 19 with a non-conference match on the road at Emmanual College.
