MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team fell to nationally-ranked Francis Marion University 8-1 in Peach Belt Conference play March 24.
The Falcons fell to 13-3 overall and 2-3 in Peach Belt Conference action following the setback against the Patriots, who are ranked No. 37 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II rankings.
Sophomore Julia Berg and freshman Amanda Gautreaux teamed up to defeat the Patriots' Sofia Henning and Anna Wintrich 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles' match in the Falcons' lone victory.
Sophomore Alina Munteanu battled Samantha Koelliker of Francis Marion in the No. 1 singles' match before falling 6-2, 2-6, 10-8. Koelliker entered the match ranked No. 25 nationally in the latest ITA NCAA Division II singles' rankings and No. 5 in the Southeast Region rankings.
Sophomore Emily Beatty fell to the Patriots' Maria Krueger 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 in the No. 2 singles' match. Berg dropped the No. 3 singles' match against Eva Lieben of Francis Marion 6-0, 6-3.
Freshman Merel Van Zutphen fell to Henning of Francis Marion 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles' match. Sophomore Rayne Sinclair dropped the No. 5 singles' match against Wintrich 6-2, 6-4.
Gautreaux fell to Theresa Hammerschlag of Francis Marion 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles' match.
Sophomore Alice Copland and Sinclair fell to Koelliker and Krueger 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles' match. Munteanu and Van Zutphen dropped the No. 2 doubles' match against the Patriots' Anilu Barraza Araiza and Lieben 8-5.
The Falcons will return to action Monday, March 27 in a non-conference match against Tuskegee University at the Montevallo Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
