YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team fell on the road at Young Harris College 5-4 in a close match in Peach Belt Conference play March 31.
The Falcons fell to 14-4 overall and 2-4 in Peach Belt Conference play following the setback against the Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 38 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II rankings and No. 8 in the Southeast Region.
The Mountain Lions' Laura Sanchez outlasted freshman Merel Van Zutphen 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the deciding match in No. 4 singles' action.
Sophomore Alina Munteanu defeated her nationally-ranked opponent, Eva Castiglioni of Young Harris, 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles' match. Munteanu, who is ranked No. 12 in the latest ITA NCAA Division II Southeast Region singles' rankings, took down Castiglioni, who is ranked No. 40 in the ITA national rankings.
Sophomore Emily Beatty took down the Mountain Lions' Elin Rundcrantz 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles' match.
Munteanu and Van Zutphen teamed up to defeat Carol Quevedo and Maria Puerta 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles' match. Sophomore Julia Berg and freshman Amanda Gautreaux knocked off the Mountain Lions' Oriana Labaqui and Sanchez 8-4 in the No. 3 doubles' match.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, April 1 with another Peach Belt Conference match on the road at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
