MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team defeated Georgia Southwestern in front of the largest crowd in the sport's history in a 8-1 victory on Sea of Purple day April 7.
The Falcons continue to add to their record-breaking season as they picked up their single-season best 16th victory to improve to 16-5 overall and 4-5 in Peach Belt Conference play.
Sophomore Alina Munteanu, who is ranked No. 12 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II Southeast Region singles' rankings, swept Maria Taboada of Georgia Southwestern 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles' match.
Sophomore Emily Beatty defeated the Hurricanes' Celia del Castillo 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles' match. Sophomore Julia Berg topped Hannah Ayers of Georgia Southwestern 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles' match.
Sophomore Rayne Sinclair claimed the No. 4 singles' match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Hurricanes' Kendall Crew. Sophomore Lauren Pero defeated Lauren Resnick of Georgia Southwestern 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles' match.
Sophomore Alice Copland and Sinclair teamed up to defeat Taboada and Castillo 8-4 in the No. 1 doubles' match. Freshman Merel Van Zutphen and Munteanu combined to top Ayers and Resnick 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles' match.
Freshman Amanda Gautreaux and Berg claimed the No. 3 doubles' match with a 8-6 win over the Hurricanes' Anneliese Leahy and Crew.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, April 8 with another Peach Belt Conference contest against visiting Georgia College. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
