Falcons fall to nationally-ranked PBC leader Columbus State 5-0

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis fell to nationally-ranked Peach Belt Conference leader Columbus State University 5-0 in a home match April 9.

The Falcons fell to 16-7 overall and 4-7 in Peach Belt Conference play following the setback against the Cougars, who are ranked No. 7 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II rankings and No. 2 in the Southeast Region.

Sophomore Alina Munteanu won her first set 6-2 and was leading 1-0 in the second set of the No. 1 singles' match against Giorgia Vitale of Columbus State, who is ranked No. 21 nationally in the ITA NCAA Division II singles' rankings. The match was unfinished due to the Cougars winning five matches before the completion of the battle between Vitale and Munteanu, who is ranked No. 12 in the ITA NCAA Division II Southeast Region singles' rankings.

Sophomore Emily Beatty was in a battle with the Cougars' Kirsa Utech, who is ranked No. 29 nationally in the ITA NCAA Division II singles' rankings. The unfinished match between Beatty and Utech was tied 4-4 in the first set.

The Falcons will return to action Thursday, April 13 with a trip to Livingston, Alabama to take on the University of West Alabama in a non-conference contest.
