Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Montevallo junior Alina Munteanu set a new program record for the most career singles' victories after registering her 53rd win in singles' play in the Falcons' 9-0 sweep of host Christian Brothers University in their Gulf South Conference opener Feb. 8.
The Falcons improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Gulf South Conference play following the victory.
"We got off to a very slow start in doubles but bounced back in singles," said Montevallo women's tennis coach Adam Albertsen, who recently picked up his 100th career victory. "This was a nice team win as well as an amazing accomplishment for Alina. She is an extremely hard worker and leader for our team."
Munteanu defeated Tara McElroy of Christian Brothers 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles' match. Junior Emily Beatty topped the Buccaneers' Lauren Woog 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles' match.
Freshman Bhargavi Kalaga topped Judit Aubets Macia of Christian Brothers 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles' match. Freshman Maria Garcia knocked off the Buccaneers' Meg Mattis 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles' match.
Sophomore Amanda Gautreaux defeated Melody Mays of Christian Brothers 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles' match. Freshman Dorotea Hanzek topped Brittany Weathersby 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles' match.
Beatty and Kalaga knocked off Woog and McElroy 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles' match. Munteanu and Gautreaux edged Mattis and Aubets Macia 9-8 (7-2) in the No. 2 doubles' match.
Juniors Allie Whitley and Rayne Sinclair topped Mays and Weatherby 8-5 in the No. 3 doubles' match.
The Falcons will return to action Friday, Feb. 16 with a home match against the University of West Florida in Gulf South Conference play. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
