MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team defeated visiting Young Harris College 7-2 in a non-conference match March 10.
The Falcons moved to 12-1 on the season after knocking off the regionally-ranked Mountain Lions, who entered the match ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region. Young Harris is now 8-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Peach Belt Conference.
"This was a high-quality win over a very good Young Harris team," said Montevallo women's tennis Adam Albertsen. "We have lost some tough matches to them in the past, so it was great to see us play at a high level in singles today and come out with victory."
The Falcons got off to a slow start by only winning one out of three doubles' matches before quickly rebounding to win all six singles' matches.
Junior Alina Munteanu defeated the Mountain Lions' Elin Rundcrantz 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles' match. Junior Emily Beatty topped Oriana Labaqui of Young Harris 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles' match.
Freshman Bhargavi Kalaga took down the Mountain Lions' Ana Rodriguez 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles' match. Freshman Maria Garcia defeated Laura Sanchez of Young Harris 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles' match.
Freshman Dorotea Hanzek topped the Mountain Lions' Carol Quevedo 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles' match. Sophomore Amanda Gautreaux edged Maria Puerto of Young Harris 2-6, 6-2 10-7 in the No. 6 singles' match.
Beatty and Kalaga fell to Labaqui and Rodriguez 8-5 in the No. 1 doubles' match. Munteanu and Garcia defeated Puerta and Quevedo 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles' match.
Hanzek and Gautreaux fell to Sanchez and Rundcrantz 8-5 in the No. 3 doubles' match.
The Falcons will return to action Friday, March 16 with a match on the road at North Greeneville University.
