Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team tied the school record for most wins in a season March 25 after sweeping Gulf South Conference opponent Delta State University 9-0.
The Falcons improved to 16-1 on the season, tying the school record of 16 wins just last season, and 6-1 in Gulf South Conference play. Montevallo recently moved into the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II national rankings with a No. 30 ranking in the poll.
"We had excellent team energy today on the courts," said Montevallo women's tennis coach Adam Albertsen. "I really like how focused we were and played smart tennis."
Junior Alina Munteanu set the Montevallo school record for most singles' wins in a single season with her 22nd singles' victory after knocking off Jemina Linn Sorman of Delta State 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles' match.
Junior Emily Beatty moved into second place in the Falcons' record book for most singles' victories in a career after defeating Charlotte Le Flohic of Delta State 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles' match.
Freshman Bhargavi Kalaga topped Nathalia Sato of Delta State 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles' match. Freshman Maria Garcia swept Sarah Nash of Delta State 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles' match.
Freshman Dorotea Hanzek took down Nathalia Stelzer of Delta State 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles' match. Sophomore Amanda Gautreaux defeated Kyra Holway of Delta State 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 6 singles' match.
Kalaga and Beatty knocked off Sorman and Stelzer 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles' match. Garcia and Munteanu topped LeFlohic and Sato 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles' match.
Junior Allie Whitley and Hanzek topped Nash and Holway 8-4 in the No. 3 doubles' match.
The Falcons will return to action Wednesday, March 28 with a Gulf South Conference match on the road at Shorter University in Rome, Georgia.
