ROME, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team set a new program record for most wins in a season with its 17th victory of the season following a 9-0 sweep of Shorter University on the road March 28 in Gulf South Conference play.

The Falcons, who moved up to No. 26 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II national rankings, improved to 17-1 overall and 7-1 in Gulf South Conference matches.

"This is an incredible group of student-athletes who work extremely hard on and off the courts," said Montevallo women's tennis coach Adam Albertsen. "The school record for wins is something they can all be proud of during this very special season."

Junior Alina Munteanu defeated her opponent in the No. 1 singles' match 6-2, 6-2. Junior Emily Beatty claimed the No. 2 singles' match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Freshman Bhargavi Kalaga claimed the No. 3 singles' match with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Freshman Maria Garcia swept her opponent in the No. 4 singles' match 6-0, 6-0.

Sophomore Amanda Gautreaux won the No. 5 singles' match 6-0, 6-0 and junior Allie Whitley won the No. 6 singles' match by default.

Beatty and Kalaga won the No. 1 doubles' match 8-3, while Munteanu and Garcia swept their opponents in the No. 2 doubles' match 8-0.

Gautreaux and Whitley won the No. 3 doubles' match 8-0.

The Falcons will return to action Friday, March 30 in a home Gulf South Conference match against the University of North Alabama.
