Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team defeated host Alabama-Huntsville 8-1 in a Gulf South Conference match March 6.
The Falcons improved to 10-1 overall and 3-1 in Gulf South Conference play following the victory.
"We showed tremendous fight after losing three first sets and fighting back to go to tiebreakers," said Montevallo women's tennis coach Adam Albertsen.
Junior Alina Munteanu defeated Stefanie Mehlich of UAH 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 in the No. 1 singles' match. Junior Emily Beatty fell to the Chargers' Cristina Cabanas 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 8-10 in the No. 2 singles' match.
Freshman Bhargavi Kalaga topped Sarah Stearman of UAH 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 in the No. 3 singles' match. Freshman Maria Garcia swept the Chargers' Monika Polakovic 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets in the No. 4 singles' match.
The Falcons won the No. 5 singles' match and No. 6 singles' match by default as the Chargers fielded just four players in their singles' lineup.
Beatty and Kalaga edged Stearman and Mehlich 9-8 (7-5) in the No. 1 doubles' match.
Munteanu and Garcia defeated Cabanas and Polakovic 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles' match, while the Falcons won the No. 3 doubles' match by default after UAH fielded just two doubles' teams.
Montevallo will return to action Saturday, March 10 with a non-conference match against Young Harris College. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
