MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team defeated regionally-ranked Valdosta State University 6-3 in a Gulf South Conference match March 9.

The Falcons improved to 11-1 on the season and 4-1 in Gulf South Conference play following the victory.

"This was a good win for our team as we are continuing to keep momentum going in Gulf South Conference play," said Montevallo women's tennis coach Adam Albertsen. "We now turn our attention to a very strong Young Harris team who is having a great season and is regionally ranked."

Freshman Bhargavi Kalaga defeated Danielle Barte of Valdosta State 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles' match. Freshman Maria Garcia took down the Blazers' Hera Bork Brynjarsdottir 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles' match.

Freshman Dorotea Hanzek took down Taylor Vinge of Valdosta State 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles' match. Junior Rayne Sinclair defeated the Blazers' Amelia Cornwell 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles' match.

Junior Alina Munteanu fell to Sabrina Schmidt of Valdosta State 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles' match. Junior Emily Beatty fell to the Blazers' Estee Widdershoven 7-6, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles' match.

Kalaga and Beatty topped Schmidt and Widdershoven 8-5 in the No. 1 doubles' match. Munteanu and Garcia defeated Barta and Brynjarsdottir 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles' match.

Sophomore Amanda Gautreaux and Hanzek fell to Anke Poncelet and Vinge 8-6 in the No. 3 doubles' match.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, March 10 with a home match against Young Harris College. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
