MONTGOMERY, Ala. - On Wednesday night, the Montevallo volleyball team traveled to Auburn University at Montgomery to play against the University of West Alabama Tigers.
Set one was a back-and-forth battle that featured nine tie scores and seven lead changes. Montevallo led 20-17 before the Tigers roared back with a five-point run to take the lead. A kill by
Sydney Smith tied the score at 22-all before the Tigers went on another run to close out the first set, 22-25.
The Falcons pulled away in set two behind a stronger offensive performance, retaking the lead for good at 9-8, and cruised to a 25-17 victory to even the match at one set apiece. The Falcons put down 16 kills in the set, their highest total of the night.
In set three, Montevallo jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before the Tigers ran off six straight points. Those six points proved to be decisive, as West Alabama took the third set, again with a score of 22-25.
Montevallo again jumped out to a lead in the fourth set. After leading 11-7, however, the Tigers went on a seven-point run to take the lead 11-14. The Falcons answered with a six-point run of their own to retake a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the set, soaring to another 25-17 victory.
Montevallo never trailed in the fifth and decisive set. With the score tied 6-6, Montevallo put together a six-point run. When the final one of
Amanda Nugent's 20 kills hit the floor, the Falcons found themselves on the winning side, 15-10.
On offense, Nugent led the Falcons' attack, putting away 20 kills on 41 attempts for a .439 hitting percentage while sophomore
Isabelle Fuell distributed a career-high 54 assists. Defensively, five Falcons had double-digit dig performances, with Freshman
Casey Hendrixson leading the way with a new career-high 21 digs. Sophomore middle hitter
Morgan Hoffman contributed five blocks.
