MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 12 ranked Montevallo baseball team earned its sixth straight win and improved to 9-1 on the year after defeating Walsh 12-2 on Sunday to complete the series sweep.
Pitching continued to dominate on the mound and the bats stayed hot at the plate in the series finale against the regionally-ranked Walsh Cavaliers.
Dylan Freeman earned his third start of the year and improved to 2-0. The senior faced 20 batters, recorded 12 strikeouts and allowed just three hits and one run in five innings pitched.
Reed Latimer and
Ben Teel were offensive bright spots for the Falcons as each added three RBI. Teel finished 2-for-3 while Latimer was 3-for-4 with a homer.
A single up the middle from Latimer to score Teel in the bottom of the first opened the scoring for Montevallo.
Evan Liddie singled in the bottom of the second inning, scoring
Luke Mitchell and
Alex Langford to push the lead to 3-0.
In the third, a solo homer off the bat of Latimer added another run for UM to lead 4-1.
Teel added an RBI in the bottom of the fourth to push Montevallo on top 5-1, scoring Mitchell on a single to right.
Freeman returned to the mound in the top of the fifth and struck out the side for the second consecutive inning, pushing his strikeout total to 12 as he retired the eighth straight batter.
The bats broke loose in the bottom of the sixth as the Falcons plated four more runs. Teel delivered another RBI single to score Mitchell before
Sam Kuchinski rifled a two-RBI single to left field, scoring
Wyatt Cunningham and
Matt Simon. Then, Latimer singled to load the bases for
Asa Awbrey who brought home Teel on a sacrifice fly.
Teel added his third RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to score Christian Kahaller.
In the final frame, Awbrey scored on a wild pitch and
Zen Hiatt scored from a
Will Pratt sacrifice fly to end the game in the eighth, 12-2, with the run rule.
