Women's Tennis to Face No. 2 AUM at GSC Championship

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Montevallo women's tennis drew the seventh seed and is set to face No. 2 Auburn Montgomery in the first round of the 2023 Gulf South Conference Championship.

Montevallo heads into the tournament with a 10-8 overall record, the first winning season since a shortened 2019-20 campaign, while going 5-5 in conference matches. The Falcons got out to a slow start to the year with four-straight losses before finishing the season with a 10-4 record in the final 14 matches. The ladies strung together six-consecutive victories from March 19-April 12 with just two points scored by opponents in that span. UM capped the regular season on a high note with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Lee on April 15.

The Falcons' top singles player is Lieselotte Hartlöhner who is currently on an 11-match winning streak while posting a 12-4 record throughout the season. The sophomore also owns the top GSC record on the squad with a 7-1 mark in conference play. Freshman Greta Vagnini's debut season saw an 8-1 overall record with a 4-0 mark in GSC action while Mireia Turro holds an 8-6 mark as the No. 1 singles player.

Montevallo has also been solid in the doubles matches with three different pairings posting a winning record in 2023. UM's doubles teams are headlined by the No. 28 duo in the nation, Turro and Cyba Ozzor. The pairing owns the top mark on the Falcons' squad with a 12-3 record throughout the season. Hartlöhner and Emily Hafner have seen success during 2023 as well with a 12-6 mark with Eva Dirr and Erika Freire holding the third winning record at 7-4.

The Falcons are set to face off with second-seed Auburn Montgomery as the seven seed in the tournament. Montevallo will look to avenge a loss to the Warhawks on April 12. AUM enters the championship with a 17-4 overall record with a 9-1 mark in GSC action.

"We drew AUM in the first round, and we just recently played them," said Head Coach Tanner Stancil. "We had some really good competitive matches that could have gone either way. We have to come out focused and lay everything on the line against this quality opponent. I have the utmost confidence in the ladies to do well in this tournament."

Montevallo will take on AUM at 10:00 a.m. on April 20 in Montgomery, Ala. at the O'Connor Tennis Center in the first round of the 2023 GSC Women's Tennis Championship.
