MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo men's and women's tennis teams are set for a pair of matchups over the next three days, beginning with a home contest against nationally ranked GSC opponent Mississippi College before traveling to Meridian, Miss., for a neutral-site matchup against Southern Arkansas on Monday.
Saturday's match against the Choctaws is scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. start at the UM Tennis Court Complex, while Monday's contest against the Muleriders is set for 1:00 p.m.
Both Falcon squads enter the weekend with identical 4-3 overall records and 1-2 marks in GSC play. The Montevallo women are coming off a 6-1 loss to No. 15 Valdosta State, while the men dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to the Blazers. Despite the setback, No. 61 Klara Podskubkova continued her strong spring campaign with a victory at No. 1 singles. On the men's side, Simon Luigs earned GSC Player of the Week honors after posting a perfect 4-0 record across singles and doubles in wins over No. 23 UT Southern and Spring Hill.
Mississippi College enters Saturday's matchup with both teams performing at a high level. The Choctaw women are ranked No. 6 nationally and boast a perfect 14-0 record, including a 3-0 mark in conference play. They most recently secured a 7-0 win over Delta State. Emily Buchanan leads the way with a No. 5 national singles ranking, while she teams with Ann Cabot Stockett as the No. 3 doubles pair in the country.
On the men's side, Mississippi College is ranked No. 17 with a 9-3 overall record and a 2-1 mark in GSC play. The Choctaws are coming off a 6-1 victory over Delta State. Matias Ruiz (No. 34), Mattia Ricci (No. 64), and Mikayel Avanesyan (No. 67) all hold national singles rankings. In doubles, Ruiz and Ricci are ranked No. 9, while Avanesyan and Charles Lefort come in at No. 42.
Southern Arkansas will meet the Falcons on Monday in Meridian. The Mulerider women enter with a 5-7 record and are led by the No. 48 nationally ranked doubles team of Roksana Kokocha and Taylor Conway. They are coming off a 4-0 loss to Missouri Western State.
The Southern Arkansas men are ranked No. 47 nationally with a 7-4 overall record and a 2-0 mark in Great American Conference play. Frode Neumann leads the squad with a No. 68 singles ranking. In doubles, Jonas Sommer and Uwe Diehl are ranked No. 7 nationally, while Neumann and Lucas Nitzcschke check in at No. 40.
