BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Zach Wyatt has been named the Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, while Luke Holbrook earned GSC Freshman of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday.
Wyatt turned in a dominant performance in his Friday night start against Valdosta State, recording a career-high 12 strikeouts while allowing just three hits and two runs over 7.2 innings in the Falcons' 9-5 victory. On the season, the Pelham, Ala., native holds a 4-3 record with a 4.59 ERA across eight starts. He has totaled a team-high 55 strikeouts, ranking second in the conference and sixth nationally.
Holbrook was equally impressive in his start on the mound Saturday, tossing a career-high 7.2 scoreless innings while striking out nine without issuing a walk. The Huntsville, Ala., product also scattered just five hits in the Falcons' 1-0 shutout victory. On the year, Holbrook owns a 2-3 record with a 2.15 ERA, while opponents are hitting just .224 against the freshman righthander.
