Falcons Finish Fourth and Fifth at GSC Championships

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Montevallo track and field teams competed the 2023 Gulf South Conference Championships with the men finishing fourth while the women took home fifth. 
 
On the men's side of the track, sophomore Jacob Cofield earned a fifth-place finish after completing the 800-meter run in 1:53.99. The Falcons relay team of Amari Lewis, Matthew Gray, J'Brelin Cook and Caleb Kariuki added a fourth-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 41.98-seconds. Cook and Lewis paired with Julian Fore and Jacob Cofield for a fifith-place mark of 3:21.76 in the 4x400-meter relay. 
 
Amber Fisher posted a time of 4:53.17 (12th) in the 1,500-meter race while Sarah Turner finished the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.68 (15th). Kiffin Brun added a point with her time of 1:15.09 (eighth) in the 400-meter hurdles. Montevallo's relay team of Hannah Smith, Sydney Goode, Destiny Betton and Amber Fisher added a fourth-place finish to the Falcons' tally with a time of 4:22.76. 
 
Pole vaulter Micah Flores highlighted Montevallo's men's field events with a fifth-place mark of 3.95-meters. Gaines Myrick added a pair of points after marking a 13.62-meter throw (seventh) in the shot put while adding another in the javelin with an eighth-place mark of 47.16-meters. Graduate Peyton Higgins took home a points finish in the javelin after throwing 49.42-meters. 
 
Freshman Leah Dendy set a new GSC record after clearing 3.60-meters in the pole vault for Montevallo's lone gold medal on the weekend. 2022 pole vault champion Skylar Suggitt just missed the podium with a mark of 3.35-meters (fourth). Junior Nautica Swain took home silver in the javelin with a final mark of 35.75-meters. 
 
Montevallo men's track and field earned its fourth-place finish in the meet with a final score of 96 points while the women's team finished fifth with a total of 62 points.  
 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
  • Freshman sprinter Matthew Gray finished eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.85-seconds. 
  • J'Brelin Cook, Julian Fore, and Amari Lewis each finished inside the top-15 in the 400-meter race with times of 49.62 (12th), 49.79 (14th), and 50.03-seconds (15th), respectively. 
  • Freshman Sarah Turner finished the 800-meter race in 2:26.68 (15th).
  • Junior Amber Fisher ran the 1,500-meter race in 4:53.17 (13th). 
  • Joshua Stidfole and Joshua Jackson finished in the top-15 in the 1,500 with times of 3:56.20 (12th), and 4:00.27 (15th), respectively. 
  • Higgins finished ninth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.65-meters. 
 
UP NEXT: Montevallo will close out the 2023 campaign at the Lee Last Chance Meet on May 12-13.
