The 1981 Men's Golf Team was the most successful in UM history. The team won four tournaments and was runner-up in five out of ten total events. Three different players won five individual championships, and five different players earned 22 all-tournament recognition. The team, led by current UM Hall of Famers Larry Adams and Norm Tums, repeated as Southern States Conference Champions, NAIA District 27 Champions and advanced to the NAIA National Championship Tournament where they finished a program best 11th place. Other awards included NAIA All-American, NAIA Academic All-American, Dean's Trophy, Neal Shirley Award and NAIA District 27 Coach of the Year. Building off the success of the 1980 team, which was the first in program history to play in a national championship, three returning players and a host of recruits took the Montevallo men’s golf program "from obscurity to national prominence” as said by Hall of Fame Head Coach Dr. Leon G. Davis, in a letter to the team. The team featured regular starters Adams, Tums, Greg Aderhold, Les Holcombe, and Tim Mosteferis. Rounding out the team were William Brummitt and Scott Henderson. Prior to 1980, no team had advanced to a NAIA National Championship event.
