1999 UM Hall of Fame Inductee, Greg Key was the first pro draftee ever signed by the University of Montevallo. Key made an immediate impact once he arrived on the UM campus, earning All-District 27 honors during his freshman season with a .318 batting average and a then-school record five triples.

Over his four-year career at Montevallo, Greg set school records for at bats (737), runs (197), hits (247) and triples (12) in a career. After completing his eligibility at UM, Key also owned the career records for games played (210), doubles (35), home runs (35), total bases (411), runs batted in (123), stolen bases (89) and stolen base percentage (.856). He currently ranks in the top five in all those categories.

A 1981 Honorable Mention NAIA All-American, Key came back to Montevallo after being drafted in the 35th round following his junior season. In 1982, he set a then-single season record for stolen bases (31) and was drafted by the California Angels in the June Amateur Draft.
