Charles Dickinson made a lasting impact on the Shelby County community as both a standout student-athlete at the University of Montevallo and one of Alabama's most respected high school basketball coaches.

Following two years of service in the U.S. Army, Dickinson joined the Montevallo men's basketball program and competed for the Falcons from 1973-78. During his career, he earned the team's Most Valuable Player Award in both 1977 and 1978, was named All-Southern Conference, and twice received the Liberty Union Life University of Montevallo Player of the Month Award. Serving as both a captain and co-captain, Dickinson finished his collegiate career as one of Montevallo's 1,000-point scorers, totaling 1,115 career points while averaging 10.2 points per game.

After graduating from Montevallo with a degree in physical education in 1978, Dickinson embarked on a distinguished 31-year high school coaching career that left an enduring legacy across central Alabama. Following a stint at John Carroll High School, he spent 26 years as the head coach at Shelby County High School, compiling 344 victories and finishing his coaching career with nearly 400 wins overall.

Dickinson retired from Shelby County High School in 2011 after serving as a coach, educator, and athletic director. In recognition of his remarkable contributions to the school and community, the Shelby County High School gymnasium was dedicated as the Charles Dickinson Gymnasium, honoring a career defined by leadership, mentorship, and service.
