1990 UM Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. Leon Davis' career at The University of Montevallo began in 1963 and ended with his retirement in 1991. Dr. Davis taught in the HPER Dept. and filled several positions in the Department of Athletics. In 1963 he began making preparations to initiate intercollegiate basketball for men. He was head coach of the basketball team for five years beginning with the 1964-65 season. After the 1968-69 season, he turned the basketball program over to his assistant coach, and served as coach of the tennis team for two years. In the Fall of 1969, he began his duties in athletic administration and was eventually named Director of Athletics. After two years his coaching duties changed and he served as golf coach from 1971 until his retirement. He retired as a Full Professor and Director of Athletics for men and women in August, 1991. In 1969, he began serving as Secretary-Treasurer of the Alabama Collegiate Conference. For six years he served in that office as well as that of Chairman of NAIA District 27. In 1975 he was elected to the NAIA National Executive Committee. He served on the committee for nine years and was National President of NAIA in 1982-83.
