Sammy Dunn played baseball at the University of Montevallo for two seasons from 1974-75, one season under coach Fred Weems and one under coach Bob Riesener.
A third baseman at UM, Dunn transferred to Montevallo prior to his junior season after being named the Alabama co-"Player of the Year" at Jeff State in Birmingham. A 1970 graduate of Fairfield High School, Dunn earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1975 from UM and earned a master's degree in education; environmental safety in 1981, also from UM.
He started his coaching career at Pizitz Middle School in Vestavia after being selected co-captain of the Falcon baseball team as a senior and hitting .317 that season as UM posted a 15-25 record.
Dunn has served as the head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Vestavia Hills High School since 1978 and has crafted the Rebel baseball program into a state prep baseball power. Dunn-coached teams have won Alabama Class 6A state title five times (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994,1995, 1996) and finished as runner-up twice. The Rebels have also four claimed countless area and tournament titles and sent scores of players into collegiate and professional baseball. Prior to this season, Dunn has recorded a 437-122 record in baseball and 146-48 record in football. He has also served on the 1984 Baseball Olympic Selection Committee, as director of the Southern States Conference Baseball Tournament and hosted a multitude of coaching clinics and as the Alabama High School Athletic Association's District Representative.
He is married to the former Linda Forsythe, and lives in Vestavia.
