Although he holds not one single basketball record, Lonnie Edwards is without a doubt one of the most important figures in UM athletic history. In a time when segregation was still visible on college campuses, Edwards joined Hansell Gunn as one of the first two black athletes at the University of Montevallo. Not only an outstanding player who averaged over 12 points in the 1970-71 season, Edwards made it easier for future black students at athletes at Montevallo by his outstanding conduct and student involvement. A junior college transfer, Edwards was named one of UM's senior class favorites after just one year on campus. According to former UM athletic director Leon Davis, "That, more than anything else, should tell you what kind of student/athlete Lonnie Edwards was." Edwards is currently serving as the director of personnel in the DeKalb County school systems in Georgia.
