At the end of the 1971-72 basketball season, Gene Meadows became the first University of Montevallo basketball star to receive All-American honors when he earned an Honorable Mention in balloting for the prestigious NAIA Team.

Meadows gained the honor with an outstanding junior season that saw the Falcons participate in the NAIA District Playoffs for the first time. Meadows led the team in scoring, notching 504 points for an 18.0 per game average, and was second in rebound with 9.3 per outing. He hit .473 from the floor and .652 from the charity stripe.

Meadows came to Montevallo from a two-year stint at Cleveland (Tenn.) State Junior college. His career scoring average was 16.1 and his rebounding average was 8.1. He was a two-time All-Conference selection, made six All- Tournament teams, and was All-State Small College and All-District 27 his junior year.

After leaving Montevallo, Meadows worked for Southern Athletic-Bike Apparel in Knoxville, Tenn., and then for Integon, a marketing and financial services firm.
