1989 UM Hall of Fame inductee, Margaret Ann Blalock, died on October 16,1989 at the age of 54. Born in Warrior, Alabama, she earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Montevallo in 1957 and her master's and doctorate at the University of Alabama. She taught at the secondary school level and at the Birmingham YWCA before joining the faculty of her alma mater in 1966, where she taught for 23 years.

Probably her most notable accomplishment was the establishment of the women's athletic program at the University of Montevallo. She was also instrumental in the formation of the Alabama Women's intercollegiate Sports Association , an affiliate of the national organization, the Association of intercollegiate Athletics for Women.

In the early years of the University of Montevallo women's athletic program, Dr. Blalock led the volleyball team to the 1972 state championship, the runner-up position in the regional championship, and a trip to the national tournament in Provo, Utah. From 1972-1976, her teams finished in the state top three five times. She also guided the UM tennis team to a fourth place state finish in 1972.
