Kenny Gonzales came to Montevallo as an assistant baseball coach in 1974. During his two years as an assistant, he helped develop the baseball tradition that exists today. He joined the Kansas City Royals as a talent scout, after three years as a college head coach.

In 1986 he counted one of the greatest sports coups in history by signing Heisman Trophy winner, Bo Jackson to a professional contract. He was also awarded the Ewing M. Kaufman award for outstanding contributions, to scouting and player development and was named 1986 Kansas City Royals Scout of the Year.

In 1988 he was named the TOPPS Baseball Card Scout of the Month. He signed two other No. 1 draft choices and in 1993 was promoted to Midwest Regional scouting Supervisor for the Royals. Though he left Montevallo in 1977, he left his own legacy. His son, David, played basketball for the Falcons from 1990-94.
