Dr. Paul N. Doran, Jr. has dedicated his life to education, community service, and leadership, leaving a profound impact on every organization he has served. A graduate of the University of Montevallo with a B.S. in Business Administration in 1968. While at Montevallo, he was a member of the UM golf team from 1965 to 1967 and President of the Sigma’s Social Club/Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He also earned recognition as Who’s Who Amongst American Colleges and University while in school. Doran’s knack for leadership was seen early on as has also served as Vice President of the Inter-Fraternal Council and was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity and Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society. Doran’s nearly 33-year education career began shortly after graduation as teacher in the Dallas County School System in Selma, Alabama. In 1970, he began instructing at the collegiate level and over a distinguished academic career, Doran served as Chair of the Division of Business and Related Technologies and Department Chair of Business Administration and Economics at Jefferson State Community College, overseeing more than a dozen academic programs. In addition, he taught courses in statistics and accounting at Samford University and taught golf from 1987-1996 at Jefferson State. Doran’s teaching achievements were formally recognized in 1988 as he earned Jefferson State’s Outstanding Faculty Classroom Teacher Award. Doran’s leadership extended well beyond academics. He currently serves on the University of Montevallo Foundation Board of Directors, acting as Chair for five years, and has held roles on the University of Montevallo National Alumni Association Board, including Alumni Association President, Board of Directors Chairman, Vice President and Parliamentarian. Doran also spent time on the College of Business Board. From 1997-2013, Doran served as President of UM’s Jefferson County Alumni Chapter. For nearly 20 years, Doran spearheaded Montevallo’s Annual Alumni Golf Tournament and later helped transition the tournament to a prominent fundraiser for the Athletic Department. Doran was recognized with the Mary Lou Elder Williams Alumnus Loyalty Award in 2002 and the Dr. Leon G. Davis Award in 1999. He has been a steadfast advocate for the University and its alumni. Since his playing days at UM, Doran has also been a significant philanthropic contributor to the university and its mission. His leadership and philanthropy extend well beyond Montevallo, however.  Doran’s civic contributions include being a founding board member of the City of Hoover Board of Education, where he helped establish the Hoover City Schools system and oversaw the construction of Hoover High School. Additionally, he created the Homewood Library Foundation to financially support the Homewood Public Library and served as Chair of its Board of Trustees. In 2017, to commend his efforts, Doran received the Library Champion Award from Jefferson County Library Cooperative. Doran’s impact is also felt in healthcare and nonprofit leadership. He has been a member of the St. Vincent’s Health System Foundation Board since 2010, serving as Vice Chair and contributing to various committees. In 1991, Doran became a founding board member of the American Liver Foundation’s Alabama chapter, where he served as Vice President in 1992 and President from 1993-1996. Additionally, Doran’s professional endeavors saw him serve the Alabama Community Development Corporation as Treasurer and as a member of the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and Loan Committee from 1987-2006. A visionary leader and dedicated servant, Doran has inspired countless individuals through his commitment to education, community building, and philanthropy at the University of Montevallo and beyond. Doran currently resides in Homewood, Alabama with his wife of 55 years, Connie Osborne Doran, class of 1971 and 1973.
